"Best Dry Erase markers for children." 2009-09-26
By Rosy Redbud (N. Georgia United States)
The Melissa & Doug Dry-Erase Marker Set is the only dry erase product I have found suitable for young children. The colors are bright and clear. They truly are erasable from the dry erase board - and washable from little fingers and clothing.

My one objection is that there are only 4 colors. It would be a plus to include black, purple, orange and yellow in the package. My 3 year old grandson doesn't seem to miss the other colors much, but he does ask where they are.

A great product. Melissa & Doug Dry-Erase Marker Set (4 pc)

"Fun for right age group" 2009-07-25
By New Orleans Writer (New Orleans, LA United States)
I bought this set for my 4-year-old niece to go with a small marker board/chalk board. I have previously purchased many Melissa and Doug products and am always pleased with the quality of the product. This time was no different.

The marker set is appropriate for a child old enough not to eat the cap. I say this because some 4-year-olds still do this.

The markers work fine on the marker board, as expected, and have vibrant colors. The markers are also easily erasable with a marker board eraser, and wash out of clothing without a problem.

I would recommend this set, but older children may want more colors than just the four.

 "Everybody's Happy!" 2009-12-10
By J. Shelton (Victorville, CA)
I bought this about 4 years ago when my daughter was 1. It was really great while I was cooking dinner. My daughter would bring a little step stool into the kitchen and sit on it and learn her letters sounds and words. I don't know exactly how much it contributed to her learning but by 18 months she knew all her letters and sounds and by about 30 months she could read pretty well. My son is now 3 and can read. He also used this toy almost daily from about 18 months until, well, now! Both my kids could use this independently and it kept their interest. It has held up very well over the years, and even with almost daily use the batteries inly had to be changed, uh, maybe 3 times a year... if that. It has been dropped many times and even survived a juice spill. We lost a letter A (which is a vital letter!) and we were able to buy a replacement on Ebay for $1. I would definitely say one of the best toy buys I've made!

 "Great toy!" 2009-09-15
By R. Williams (Indianapolis, IN)
I bought this for my 2 year old. He loves to be in the kitchen with me and previously spent most of that time putting up ABCs magnets on the frig and then scattering them onto the floor. Eventually we ended up with an abridged alphabet, as well as a not so happy Mommy stepping and tripping over letters while attempting to make dinner. This was the perfect solution. Not only does it encourage him to keep the magnets off the floor, but he actually likes to put in different letters and hear their sounds. My only complaint with this set is all the letters are lower case however I've read that other Leap Frog magnet letters work with this- and they have upper case letters.

I will caution I feel this is more appropriate for an older child- preschool age. But I figured we'd grow into it and as long as he has keeps an interest in "learning" the letters, I didn't mind. Since he isn't' able to make words on his own we play the 'find a letter' game. Initially it was tricky but thankfully I only know so many three-letter words, so he's learning the letters. We also play the color game with them- find all the yellow letters and so on. Or counting game- can you find three red letters and so on.

So while it's not necessarily geared to be a toy for a child so young in my opinion, you can easily make it a toy they can grow with if you're creative.

 "Wonderful" 2009-09-11
By Mom of 4 (California)
I bought this on sale for my son (who is child #4) at Wal-Mart cause they were switching to the new design. My son loved playing with the fridge magnets at my sisters house so for his 2nd birthday I got it for him. It has been less than a month and he can identify 15 out of the 26 letters in the alphabet and he just turned 2. I would recommend this product for anyone with kids from 2 to 5. I am so happy with this product!!! I wish I would have had this for my other 3 kids.

"You need to play this toy WITH your child" 2009-09-04
By Toddler Mom
I was secretly hoping that this would entertain and educate my 4yo child without taking up my time. You definitely need to play this machine with your child if you want your child to learn. Unfortunately, the voice is very unclear. "f" sounds like "s". "hen" sounds like "fen". Heck, even I have to guess what word/letter the machine is trying to spell or say.

Also, my daughter gets disappointed when she wants to spell words longer than 3 letters and can't. Can't even spell "zoo" because there's only one "O".

The only good news is that my daughter is paying more attention to spelling and to word/letter sounds than usual. Otherwise, this toy would only get one star from me.

"Teaching the wrong sort of word" 2009-08-07
By E. Kaneko (Christchurch, New Zealand)
My 3 year old received this toy as a gift today and we were happy as we have liked the Leapfrog products she has so far but the Leapfrog Fridge Words horrified me. Why? because my child is running around the house yelling "B#TCH" because thats what the Leapfrog fridge words taught her to say, rather than "Bit" This is not a joke review, you can see my video of it on youtube. I immediately contacted Leapfrog customer service and they were very unconcerned even though I played the toy saying the word for them twice. When my kid gets kicked out of preschool for saying a word like that, are they going to take responsibility? Could have at least got a half hearted "sorry" I would recommend staying away from this particular Leapfrog product. Seems like it may have been a good toy if it didn't swear at me.

 "Cracked part" 2009-12-11
By Tech Trainwreck (Montana)
My just turned 2 year old daughter is a little young for this toy yet, so I am not a great judge of how much a kid will like it. I can, however, comment on the craftsmanship of the product

Right out of the plastic one of the nails was cracked. Due to the fact that is was a birthday gift purchased online for about $17.00 with shipping, I didn't bother trying to return it. And as one would assume, when the nail was hit with the hammer it broke in two. (I figured why not go ahead and use it since I didn't need to preserve the flaw.)

Also, in regard to craftsmanship, I read some reviews that said the nail holes are too tight and you have to pry the nails out. This is true. I have read reviews on a lot of similar products to this one and a lot of them said that nails just fell into the holes. So, its up to the customer to decide if you want nails that function like nails or nails that act like pins. For me, one the reasons I bought this toy was because I didn't read those kind of reviews about the poor fitting nails. Besides, its not like they are impossible to get out.

As far as everything else goes on this toy, it is well built. A child will have not any problem putting together the screws, nuts, and other pieces. If anything, the screw parts fit together loosely enough that a kid may not have much of a desire to use the screwdriver and wrench.

By Jenny Penny (Dover, NH)
I purchased this to go with a wooden tool bench made by Guideco that my son really enjoys playing with, but the pieces dont fit in the toolbench. And the tool box doesn't stand on its own as a toy. He would never play with the tool box and its contents without the toolbench. If you are in the market for a tool bench, consider the one from Educo. Its a little more expensive, but looks more engaging than the one from Guideco.

 "Love Love Love!" 2009-12-18
By Aidan22 (White Plains, NY)
It wasn't until my sister (a mother of a 10 month old boy) asked me what my son (now three) liked to play with when he was her sons age. I had to think for a second and then remembered the fridge DJ! It's still on the fridge and he still plays with it. Most importantly though, when he was younger (9 months to 2 years old), he would play with it for a good 30-60 minutes which allowed me to cook, clean, or whatever I had to do in the kitchen and I would dance around the kitchen while I did it. It has three "stations" alphabet, numbers and music. The tunes are really catchy and he was counting and reciting his alphabet at an early age. Also there is a small screen in the middle which shows the numbers and letters so they get a visual in addition to the audio. Very sturdy, he beat it up and it still works great, he even took it in the sandbox once (unbeknownst to me)and even though there was sand in the seams, it didn't affect how it played. Needless to say, I ordered three this Christmas for my sister and two other friends with babies. I think this is my first review ever....so obviously, I highly recommend it.

 "Doesn't stay on fridge!" 2009-11-28
By Brandy Pittman (ATL, GA)
The toy is too heavy to stay on the fridge and immediately slides to the floor everytime I put it on. I have a normal fridge, so I don't know why this product doesn't stay on, maybe the magnets aren't strong enough or the toy itself is too heavy. My 2 1/2 year old and 6 year old pick it up sometimes but it gets tossed into the toybox and doesn't get played with often.

"PLEASE READ: TWO BATTERY PULL-TABS!!" 2009-11-26
By Wendy S. Traul (Lawrence,Kansas)
There are two pull-tabs for the battery; one on the front of the packaged toy (so you can hear a sample-about 5 seconds- of the music), and one on the back of the toy itself (so the songs play all the way through).

I've never seen TWO battery pull-tabs on any toy, PLEASE don't make the same mistake I did and return the item without pulling the second pull-tab. Leapfrog doesn't mention the second tab on the packaging.

All you need to do is cut the tape on the side flap of the box, slide the toy out w/the cardboard it's attached to, and pull the plastic tab. Then slide it back in and close the box. The package is completely unharmed and giftable.

After learning this I give this product an A+!!!

This is a great toy, my 18 month old loves it. Great for little fingers, and more sophisticated than baby toys. Only suggestion I can make is to go on the fisher price direct website, and buy it there... cheaper, and so are the accessories. Shipping is relatively small, and only $40. Plus the accessory rooms are MUCH cheaper than I've found anywhere (esp on Amazon). [...]

This is the second of this doll house I have purchased. The first was for my daughter when she was 17 months for christmas. She is now 28 months and still plays with it regularly. The one I just bought is for a christmas present for a 20 month old who always loves to play with it when she comes over. (Her twin brother does too :)) If you are looking between this one and the Little People house I would sway you to this one because it feels more like a dollhouse than just the same old Little People stuff.

This set is ok. I suggest buying the larger FP dollhouse though. Little girls grow out of this set and are ready for more details and a nicer dollhouse by the time they are two and a half. I say go with the Loving Family Dollhouse and don't waste the money on this pre-dollhouse set. They will grow into the Loving Family dollhouse.

By Em's Mom (NC)
I purchased this toy for my daugther's 2nd birthday and she has played with it everyday for a month. I would highly recommend this toy. She will literally sit and play by herself for up to an hour. Some days she doesn't want to leave the house b/c she wants to play with the dollhouse. The people are the perfect size and easy to handle. I toyed with the idea of getting the more expensive dollhouse and letting her grow into it but I'm glad I didn't. This one is the perfect size and she knows exactly how to play with it. I love seeing her use her imagination! She incorporates other toys (weebles, little people, cars) that she didn't really play with before while playing with this toy.
