"It's just OK. A bit boring though" 2009-12-08
By A. Minerly
I gave these to my 17 month twin boys a few days ago. There's a battery operated maraca and one that just rattles with no lights or other sounds. They were not originally interested at all in the maraca that just rattles. They also took a little while to warm up to the one that is battery operated. Eventually, they both have taken a liking to it. It's not their favorite toy but one they will probably grow in to. Today, one of my twins was dancing and shaking both maracas, so I think we have his seal of approval for this toy. My other twin still only likes the battery operated one. They both enjoy switching from one mode to the next. They also have tossed these toys everywhere in the house and so far no damage. I'd say these are very durable. They having tossed them down the stairs or on to the first floor hardwood floors like their other toys eventually go yet, but otherwise, they do see to hold up well to the abuse they've already endured.

I didn't give it a higher rating mostly because there's not a lot of variety to the music. The numbers only go up to 10 and 6 colors in both English and Spanish. The music one just loops over and over again. Already, I think I'm going to go crazy if I hear that thing again. As long as they are enjoying the toy, I'll put up with it, but I would have preferred to have a toy with more musical choices at least. For now, the boys don't seem to care about the lack of options. They do like to shake them and change the settings themselves, and their enjoyment is what makes the toy worth hanging on to.

"Great Value and Provides Distraction Type Fun. "Shake it Up"" 2009-10-05
By Citizen John (Washington, DC)
These Counting Maracas are worth it but the musical one is truly fun and has a great beat. The female voice says "shake it up." My twin 9 month-olds play with them here and there except when I roll them around the house with the music one. You can try this activity I describle below.

The one that lights up and has sounds is fun, especially in the dark. They liked it right away. Our biggest game with that one is where I roll them around the house in an umbrella stroller in the dark or near-dark while they get to hold the musical maracas. They love that. And it's not boring because there are 3 different tunes and with different verbal themes (colors, numbers and a "shake it up" one). This maracas has a lot of great sound effects too and you can also select English or Spanish and choose between 2 volume levels. We use all the options. My twin babies feel important holding onto it while taking a ride around the house, one at a time.

The one that one just shakes and makes rattle noises is better than expected although still a little big for their 9-month old hands. They shake that one, not the musical one since that one doesn't rattle. It's a welcome addition to their toy collection but by far the best one is the musical maracas. The musical maracas didn't have to be shaped like a maracas because it's not for shaking.

One potential issue: The batteries for this one are very tiny. I'm going to have to replace mine any day now and I'm not certain it will be easy to find this type of battery.

 "Very Loud" 2009-08-11
By mschapman7 (OHIO)
This toy is very loud and not very interactive. We got this with the guitar and he has played with it almost every day since he got it more than a year ago. The maracas sit in the toy basket. They are so loud they used to scare him and he is not afraid of anything.

 "Great toy!!" 2009-06-22
By J. McPherson (New Jersey, USA)
I bought this toy for my niece's first birthday. She just loved it! She especially loved the changing colors on top of the one maraca. She loves the music and dances to it sometimes. She certainly hasn't gotten tired of it yet. I think overall this toy is great.

"Not as exciting as I'd hoped" 2009-06-08
By chicklit junkie (Cincinnati, OH)
My 10-month old loves her Alphabet Drum so I figured these would be fun for her as well. She likes the one that just shakes, but the one with the activities doesn't do a thing for her. She has very little interest in them...
